Fritz Hansen PK23 Front Upholstered Lounge Chair
Manufacturer: Fritz Hansen
Designer: Poul Kjærholm
This is an original licensed Fritz Hansen piece.
Conceived by Poul Kjærholm in 1954, the PK23 existed only as sketches for decades — a chair ahead of its time, waiting for the right moment. Approved for production by Kjærholm’s wife Hanne, the Front Upholstered edition adds a panel of fabric to the seat shell, softening the form without compromising its low, wide, conversational posture. It is the kind of chair you settle into rather than sit on — wide enough to shift position, reclined enough to stay a while.
The structure remains true to Kjærholm’s original vision: two vertically divided laminated veneer shells — seat and backrest — joined by a precisely engineered backrest bracket in brushed zamak. It is a chair that rewards close inspection; the joinery is part of the design. The front upholstery introduces warmth and tactility, making this version particularly well suited to living rooms where comfort is as important as presence.
The PK23 Front Upholstered is available in four configurations:
- Ash Black shell / Powder coated steel base — the most graphic option, a strong monochromatic presence that suits minimal and contemporary interiors
- Ash Black shell / Brushed stainless steel base — cooler and more refined, with a subtle material contrast that works equally well in eclectic or pared-back spaces
- Oak shell / Brushed stainless steel base — natural grain and warmth, well suited to lighter, Scandi-influenced interiors
- Walnut shell / Brushed stainless steel base — a deeper, richer palette, particularly striking against pale stone or plaster
The PK23 sits at an interesting point in Kjærholm’s timeline — conceived in 1954 but never produced in his lifetime, it bridges his early experimental work with the structural rigour that defined his mature output. Fritz Hansen has manufactured the Kjærholm Collection since 1982.
