The Eames Lounge Chair began with a question: ‘Why don’t we make an updated version of the old English club chair?’ What followed was years of development by Charles and Ray Eames, drawing on everything they had learned across their careers. The result, launched in 1956, redefined what a lounge chair could be — lighter and more elegant than the traditional club chair, yet more comfortable, and the first armchair to feature a swivel base. It remains one of the most recognised and enduring pieces of furniture design ever made.

Vitra has continued to refine the Lounge Chair over decades of production, deepening its sustainability credentials without compromising the original intent. The dark walnut face veneer is finished with a water-based varnish in place of polyurethane. The black premium leather covers are fully removable for cleaning or replacement and are beautifully soft to the touch.
